Early this morning an unknown hacker, or perhaps even someone within the ABC News organization, sent out a provocative tweet involving America’s president. The tweet had a very simple message that said, “Trump is our lord an savior” followed by the hashtag #thankgodforTHEDONALD.
The message itself was simple and clearly meant as a joke mocking the mainstream media’s obvious bias against Donald Trump. It also could’ve been a reference to hysteria over Barack Obama as he ran for his second term in office in 2012, with comedian and actor Jamie Foxx calling Obama “our lord and savior”.
Secondly, the tweet calls Trump “THEDONALD”, which could be a reference to the Reddit group named THE_DONALD. The_Donald is a “sub” on the massive social network Reddit and grew in popularity as the election went on last year. They were famous for publishing anti-Clinton and pro-Trump meme’s as well as sharing alternative news articles that the mainstream media refused to report on.
The anti-Trump media outlets often referred to The_Donald as Trump’s “army of trolls” that was taking over Reddit, but the reality is their group quickly became one of the only areas of free speech on the social network, with other popular groups such /r/Politics, a supposedly non-partisan political discussion area, would ban or silence any pro-Trump comments from users.
Some people criticized the hacking of ABC’s Twitter and using it to display such a trivial message as a wasted opportunity, instead preferring the hacker to spread news that the mainstream media would typically never touch.
Regardless of the outcome, the Twitter hack presented a message that caused significant tremors within the mainstream media, which in this age of outright propaganda is always a good thing.
